چکیده

We describe a computer-assisted procedure for composing harmonic progressions that takes into account the perceptual processes underlying roughness (sensory dissonance) and the pitch of complex tones. First, the user specifies the outer voices and specific model parameters, including preferred values of the perceived roughness of each sonority, the pitch commonality of successive sonorities, and the pitch commonality of each sonority with a reference sonority. The model then generates different possible chords and progressions within these constraints. The user is free to change the constraints to limit the number of possible chords and to choose from the generated chords according to personal criteria. The compositional process thus involves repeated interaction between composer and computer. We offer examples of progressions composed in this way from Dans la chair/In the Flesh, a recent piece for orchestra by the

Perceptual Learning Style Preferences and Computer-Assisted Writing Achievement within the Activity Theory Framework

Learning styles are considered among the significant factors that aid instructors in deciding how well their students learn a second or foreign language (Oxford, 2003). Although this issue has been accepted broadly in educational psychology, further research is required to examine the relationship between learning styles and language learning skills. Thus, the present study was carried out to in...

Connectionist Music Composition Based on Melodic and Stylistic Constraints

Todd Soukup Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Colorado Boulder, CO 80309-0425 We describe a recurrent connectionist network, called CONCERT, that uses a set of melodies written in a given style to compose new melodies in that style. CONCERT is an extension of a traditional algorithmic composition technique in which transition tables specify the probability of the n...

Iranian EFL Learners’ Perception of the Efficacy and Affordance of Activity Theory-based Computer Assisted Language Learning in Writing Achievement

Second language writing instruction has been greatly influenced by the growing importance of technology and the recent shift of paradigm from a cognitive to a social orientation in second language acquisition (Lantolf & Thorne, 2006). Therefore, the applications of computer assisted language learning and activity theory have been suggested as a promising framework for writing studies. The prese...

Introducing the RadBioStat Educational Software: Computer-Assisted Teaching of the Random Nature of Cell Killing

The interaction of radiation with cells and tissues has a random nature. Therefore, understanding the random nature of cell killing that is determined by Poisson distribution statistics is an essential point in education of radiation biology. RadBioStat is a newly developed educational MATLAB-based software designed for computer-assisted learning of the target theory in radiation biology. Altho...
